ZAO Mineral Silk Powder Review

Did you know that around 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed by our body? I had no idea, but since learning that fact my long term love affair with Mac Cosmetics has really started to dwindle – every time I put my make-up on I just imagine it all sinking into my system!  So in a bid to save my body from nasties and the world from my naked face I’m going to start checking out and reviewing natural, organic make-up brands in the hope that over time I will have a completly natural make-up collection. First up is ZAO Mineral Silk Foundation. We’ve recently started stocking this in our shop and online and I’ve heard great things about it.

All their products are made from 100% natural ingredients, certified organic, chemical free, cruelty free, gluten free and vegan. They claim to be a top end make-up brand that is kind to your skin and the planet which is exaclty what I’m looking for.

The first thing that struck me about this product is the GORGEOUS packaging. Oh my god it is seriosuly beautiful! It’s packaged in an elegant pure bamboo box with a lid that clicks shut with small magnets. It’s then presented in a super cute little undyed organic cotton bag with a red drawstring.

The powder is easy to apply with a large kabuki brush and gives good coverage with just one coat applied in a circular motion. A single coat covers minor imperfections and blemishes yet feels super light. For full coverage you do need to apply two or even three coats but even when layered it doesnt feel at all heavy on the skin.

As you can see in the photo it gives a really natural, glowy effect but is not at all dewy like some products. The result is absolutely flawless when applied on naked, young skin, like that of my lovely model, but for more mature skin it looks best applied over a primer or base coat. I found that it accentuated my wrinkles and looked a bit dull on my naked skin but was really lovely when I put it on over ZAO Light Complextion Base.

I’ve used Bare Minerals Foundation Powder many times and the result is really similar. Getting the right colour is key to a natural look so it’s worth spending some time to ensure you get a good match. Mineral Silk comes in a wide choice of colours ranging from pink, through neutral and into browns.

I use Medium Beige in Bare Minerals and found that 503 Neutral is a pretty close match in Mineral Silk. I used 503 as a the base coat and then applied 504 to contour and 502 to highlight. It has really good staying power – possibly better than Bare Minerals. I didnt have to touch up at all when worn on a cool day and only once on a hot sweaty day. I’ll definatley be replacing my Mac and Bare Minerals powders with Mineral Silk from now and look forward to gifting it to some of my girlfriends this festive season. The packaging makes it a really luxurious gift.
