What is a Superfood?

Blueberries

You may have heard the terms “
superfood powder” or “superfood blend” before, but you might not know exactly what they mean. That’s okay because here at Marvellous Superfood, we are experts in all things super: read the ultimate guide below!

Superfoods are mostly-plant based “whole foods”, a term that means the plant is still in its original form and has not been processed. These foods are thought to be exceptionally good for your health, as they have a high nutrient density. Whilst there are no set criteria to determine whether or not a food qualifies as a superfood, most healthy foods can contain two or three particular nutritional properties; a superfood will often have 12 or more!

A superfood mix is a great way to get additional nutrients into your diet – especially in a world where unhealthy foods are extremely tempting because of their quick preparation time or the sheer abundance of fast food outlets. Consistent unhealthy eating is simply not good for your emotions, immune system, hair, skin, or body, so adding superfoods into your daily diet will provide your body with all of the nutrients it requires to stay healthy and to run like clockwork.

Superfood nutrition

So what nutrients are in superfoods, I hear you ask? Well, it all depends on what you’re eating as each superfood has its own specific characteristics that will offer different health benefits. As a whole, superfoods are normally rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and antioxidants. They can also have healthy fats, which are thought to prevent heart disease. A good helping of fibre will aid with digestion and may prevent diabetes. Some are high in antioxidant compounds and phytonutrients, such as beta carotene and vitamins A and E, which can help rejuvenate the skin! Superfoods speed up your metabolism and burn calories, helping to support weightloss. Some superfoods can also strengthen and increase the resistance of the immune system.
